8. Korean Shamanism with Hibiscus Mudang

Hibiscus Mudang. Her name, Mudang, is translated as shaman. Hibiscus, the name her teachers and guides gave her, which is the national flower of Korea and is steeped in deep meaning.

The history of her story is truly remarkable. From her retelling of her upbringing as a child to her initiation in becoming a Mudang. What a gift to hear her vivid dreams and the epic journey she has chosen to embark on.

And to hear her life today. Sharing the mundane in the midst of the spiritual. As we all have our real, everyday lives to live in the midst of our spiritual practices. Listening to her share what her days are like was such a beautiful gift and reminder that there is beauty to be found in the simplest things.

Hibiscus Mudang
TheMudang is an ordained shaman-priest in the indigenous korean tradition Mugyo (otherwise known as korean shamanism). She was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to the United States when she was about 6 years old. Throughout her childhood, she interacted with local spirits but never in such a way that scared her parents. She began to delve into witchcraft at the age of 11 years old. By the time middle school came, she began to suffer spirit sickness. Only about ten years later did her ancestors start visiting her and showing her visions of things she couldn't have known about, and at that point reached out to mudangs to become vetted and begin the process of initiation and training in 2017.

Presently, she has a family and day job on top of her temple care duties. She resides in Washington state and enjoys warm weather, talking about spirituality, and spending quality time with her loved ones.
